Ingredients

Here's one combination of ingredients that'll help you whip up some delicious vegan pizza rolls. See suggestions below for more delicious ingredients to create a version you love. Head over to the recipe card to find all the quantities laid out for you.

  • You can find vegan cheese shreds at most major supermarkets. You can also consider purchasing vegan mozzarella and shredding it for a fresh flavor.
  • In the US, 2 easy-to-find store-bought puff pastry doughs are vegan - Pepperidge Farms and Pillsbury (but contains palm oil).
  • Substitute the vegan chorizo for any plant-based meat substitute like Beyond Meat or Impossible Meat.
  • You need a great pizza sauce to save your rolls from blandness. There are so many bad ones out there, so keep your eyes peeled for these two - RAO's or Mutti, both are high quality and sold at most major grocery chains. For homemade, try our simple, easy Hidden Veggies Pasta Sauce or Neapolitan Pizza Sauce Recipe.
  • I find with a quality sauce and the ingredients I've listed, I don't need much more. But sprinkle on the classic pizza magic-makers—garlic powder, onion powder, and Italian herbs to up the pizza flavors.

Filling Suggestions For Your Pizza Rolls

Easy vegan pizza rolls are highly customizable to your taste preferences. The recipe contains my go-to fillings but below are some suggestions to help personalize your rolls:

  • Vegan shredded cheese (mozzarella)
  • Vegan pepperoni or sausage
  • Vegan chorizo - Trader Joe's sells my favorite, called Soy Chorizo
  • Sautéed mushrooms
  • Roasted vegetables (such as bell peppers, onions, or zucchini)
  • Vegan pesto - try Pistachio Pesto, Sunflower Seed Pesto, or Vegan Sun-Dried Tomato Pesto
  • Vegan ricotta cheese
  • Sun-dried tomatoes
  • Black olives
  • Spinach or kale
  • Bell peppers
  • Red onion, finely chopped or thinly sliced
  • Vegan bacon bits
  • Vegan meatballs or crumbles
  • Vegan feta cheese

How To Make Vegan Pizza Rolls

Here is what it looks like to make the pizza rolls. For the full recipe, see the recipe card.

Step 1: After reaching room temperature, roll the pastry dough onto a floured surface into a rectangular shape. It's ok if the ends on two sides are not even. We will be pinching them or cutting them off.

Step 2: Add a thin layer of marinara sauce. Try to get close to the edges without going all the way - similar to making a pizza.

Step 3: Add all the toppings. I like to put the spinach first, then the cheese, chorizo, and fresh basil.

Step 4: Start rolling the pastry dough from its longer edge. This approach ensures you get the maximum length, allowing you to slice off plenty of pizza rolls.

Step 5: Begin by cutting the dough down the middle to create two halves. Next, split each half into two again, and keep dividing them until you reach the desired size for your rolls. This method guarantees that your pizza rolls will be uniform in size, ensuring an even bake and presentation.

Step 6: Place on a baking sheet and spread evenly apart. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for about 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. When they are done, they will be golden brown and cooked through.

Top Tips

  • Roll out the dough evenly. Use a rolling pin to roll out the dough as evenly as possible into a rectangular shape. It's not a big deal if the two shorter ends are uneven. I usually cut them off anyway. Make sure the dough is not too thick or too thin, as this can affect the cooking time and texture of the rolls.
  • Try not to overstuff the rolls. It's all about finding the perfect balance. If you go too light on the fillings, you'll end up with rolls that are more pastry than anything else. But, if you overdo it, rolling them up neatly becomes a challenge. Aim for that sweet spot where every bite is just right.
  • Spread the filling on top of the dough, leaving a small border around the edges. Roll up the dough tightly and pinch the edges to seal or cut them off.
  • Start by halving the rolled-up dough, then keep halving each piece until you have 16 evenly-sized pizza rolls. Place them up on a silicone or parchment paper-lined baking sheet or use a muffin tin.
  • Make sure to grab a sharp knife when you're cutting the dough. A dull one just won't do the trick - you'll end up having to push down really hard, and that's a surefire way to squish the dough and have all the good stuff inside ooze out.
  • These are best when served hot.

Can I Bake Homemade Pizza Rolls In The Air Fryer?

You can bake homemade pizza rolls in the air-fryer by arranging them in a single layer on parchment paper. Cook them at 380°F for about 8 minutes or until golden and crispy.

Pizza Rolls FAQS

Can I freeze vegan pizza rolls?

Once the rolls have cooled down, place them in an airtight container or a ziplock bag and store them in the freezer for up to 3 months.

How long do pizza rolls last in the refrigerator?

Vegan pizza rolls can last for up to 3 days in the refrigerator. Make sure to store leftover pizza rolls in an airtight container to prevent them from drying out. However, they are best served when right out of the oven.

Can I make vegan pizza rolls in advance?

You can prepare the dough, fill it, and assemble the rolls. Store them in the fridge until you're ready to bake.

Instructions

  • Preheat: Get your oven preheated to 400°F (200°C).
  • Roll Out Dough: Begin by rolling your dough into a rectangle on a lightly dusted surface with flour.
  • Slather: Once spread out, slather on a layer of tomato sauce and sprinkle your chosen toppings.
  • Roll: Carefully roll the dough up into a snug log. To ensure your pizza rolls at the end look uniform and tidy, pinch the ends of the log or trim them off.
  • Slice: Now, slice the log into pieces about 1 inch thick and arrange them on a baking sheet, giving them some space to puff up.
  • Bake: Slide them into the oven and let them bake for 20-25 minutes or until they've turned a beautiful golden brown.
  • Serve: Once done, serve them piping hot with extra marinara sauce or vegan ranch dressing.

Notes

The nutritional profile is only an estimate based on the ingredients in this recipe. This will vary depending on the dough and toppings you use.
You can brush the rolls lightly with olive oil or soy milk to get them to a golden brown, but I don't find it necessary with the store-bought pastry dough.
In the US, two vegan puff pastry options are Pepperidge Farms and Pillsbury (note: contains palm oil).
Roll the dough into a rectangle as evenly as you can with a rolling pin. Don't worry if the ends aren't perfect; you can trim them. Aim for a dough thickness that's just right, avoiding overly thick or thin layers for optimal cooking.
For the rolls, strike a balance with the filling. Too little, and they're all dough; too much, and they're hard to roll. Find the happy medium for the perfect bite.
Spread the filling, leaving a margin around the edges. Roll the dough tightly, then seal by pinching or trimming the edges.
Cut the roll with a sharp knife into uniform pieces, and arrange them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
These rolls are best served warm, accompanied by extra marinara sauce or Vegan Ranch for dipping.
