In my post about Vegan Chocolate Hazelnut Fondue, I talk about how fondue was a frequent meal in our household during the kids' younger years. However, our transition to veganism years ago led us to seek alternatives that allowed us to relish the same meal experiences. This is yet another variation of a chocolate fondue that is just as delicious as the traditional.

- Social Interaction: Fondue is inherently communal and interactive. It brings people together around a single pot, encouraging conversation, laughter, and shared experiences. Much like a campfire, it's a fantastic way to bond with family and friends!
- Fun and Novelty: It's not just about eating. It's about the joy of sharing a meal, making it a unique culinary adventure.

Anyway, fondue was special and had a celebratory feel, perfect for cozy nights or special occasions like birthdays, holidays, or date night.
Does Chocolate Vegan Fondue Taste Like Traditional Chocolate Fondue?
While it has peanut butter, which is not traditional, it offers a rich and creamy dip everyone swears is the real deal. Seriously, it nails that classic fondue vibe beautifully.
While a true Swiss chocolate fondue connoisseur might notice subtle differences, I believe most people wouldn't realize it's dairy-free. And the best part? You don't get a coconut cream taste if you use a high-quality coconut cream – it blends seamlessly with everything else. All in all, I think it's a great vegan alternative that's really hit the spot for me and the fam. Let me know what you think in the comments.
Ingredients
For my visual friends, here is all you'll need. See the recipe card for quantity details.
Ingredient Notes
- I use Lindt Classic Plain Oat Milk Chocolate Bars for the chocolate.
- Use creamy peanut butter.
- Use a high-quality brand like Thai Kitchen for the coconut cream.
- Use a variety of dippers such as strawberries, banana slices, apple slices, and pineapple, vegan marshmallows, pretzel sticks, graham crackers, vegan cookies (Oreos are vegan), brownie bites, and rice cakes. Make sure to double up on the popular ones.
How To Make Vegan Chocolate Peanut Butter Fondue
This comes together fast. If you're like me and like to see what you'll be doing, check these pics out. See the recipe card for detailed instructions.
Step 1: Heat the coconut cream.
Step 2: Melt the chocolate - slow and low.
Step 3: Incorporate the peanut butter and mix well.
Step 4: Add maple syrup.
Step 5: Add the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Then transfer to a fondue pot to keep warm.
Step 6: Use fondue forks or skewers to dip the fruits and treats into the chocolate peanut butter fondue.
Top Tips
- Low and slow is the name of the game. Don't boil it, heat it up to simmer on low.
- The chocolate you use will alter the flavor of your fondue. If your peanut butter is sweetened, dark chocolate is a great choice. It balances the sweetness and brings a rich, deep flavor to your fondue. However, if you're more of a milk chocolate fan, you might want to try using the oat chocolate bars I mentioned above. They tend to have a lighter, less intense flavor than traditional dark chocolate, resembling milk chocolate more closely. This can be a great substitute if you prefer milder chocolate flavors in your fondue.
- Use smooth, natural peanut butter for a creamy texture. Try avoiding brands with added sugars or oils, as they can affect the fondue's consistency and taste. I like to use Justin's Creamy Peanut Butter, which is not the smoothest brand out there but has no additives and tastes great.
- The combination of chocolate and peanut butter is naturally rich. To balance it, I add a pinch of salt and a splash of vanilla extract.
- Offer a range of dippers to complement your fondue. Not only is variety the spice of life, but it makes for a nice spread and presentation, too!

Equipment
My current fondue pot is old and I cannot link to it, however here is one from Amazon that is the currently Amazon's choice.
Variations
- Add a tablespoon of Grand Marnier, Kirsch, or Amaretto for an adult twist.
- Stir in a shot of espresso or a couple of teaspoons of instant coffee granules for a mocha flavor.
- Incorporate the zest of an orange for a citrusy twist.
Fondue Etiquette
I thought it would be fun to share some fondue etiquette for your next fondue gathering.
- Use the Right Tools: Always use the fondue forks or skewers provided for dipping. These are designed to handle the heat and provide a safe distance from the hot pot.
- No Fork Eating: That brings me to this tip that many are not aware of - Use your fondue fork for dipping only, not for eating. Transfer the dipped item to your plate and eat with your regular fork.
- No Double Dipping: It goes without saying - or does it? Once you've dipped and taken a bite, don't dip the same piece of food again. It's all about keeping the fondue experience hygienic for everyone.
- Bite-Size is Right Size: Cut your dipping items into bite-sized pieces. This makes them easy to eat in one bite and prevents them from falling into the fondue.
- Dip and Turn: When you dip, use a gentle stirring motion. This helps keep the fondue evenly heated and the top from getting a film.
- Avoid Dropping Food: If you drop your food into the fondue, it’s typically a party faux pas. Some traditions even have playful penalties for this, like singing a song or dancing. Check out this Vegan Fondue Guide for more fun tips.
Frequently Asked Questions
You don't need to use coconut cream, but it does make it silky smooth. However, my favorite substitutes include almond milk, soy milk/cream, oat milk/cream, or cashew cream, each offering a unique flavor and texture. If you notice the fondue is not thick enough, add a little more peanut butter.
Yes, you can prepare it in advance and reheat it gently, stirring frequently to ensure the texture remains smooth.
Any leftover fondue should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. A glass container is preferable since it is convenient for reheating. It should last for 3-4 days. The fondue will be hard when it comes out of the fridge. Reheat gently in the microwave, adding a little plant-based milk to adjust the consistency.
