Origin

Mint chutney has a rich history and is deeply rooted in Indian cuisine. It is believed to have originated in the Indian subcontinent, where mint leaves have been used for their medicinal properties and culinary purposes for centuries.

In Indian culture, mint chutney is highly valued for its cooling properties and is traditionally served as a condiment alongside various dishes, including snacks, main courses, and even desserts.

Quick and Easy Mint Chutney Recipe

Making this at home is a breeze. Here's a simple recipe that will allow you to enjoy the delightful flavors of this condiment in no time:

Ingredients:

  • mint leaves
  • cilantro leaves
  • green chilies
  • maple syrup
  • vegan yogurt
  • lemon juice
  • cumin seeds
  • salt to taste
  • water (as needed)

I enjoy the deliciousness of the chutney even without yogurt. However, I appreciate the texture it adds. While plain yogurt is acceptable, if using sweetened yogurt, it's important to adjust the amount of maple syrup accordingly.

Instructions

In a blender or food processor, combine mint leaves, cilantro leaves, green chilies, lemon juice, cumin seeds, sugar, and salt, blending until a smooth paste is formed, adding water if necessary, then taste and adjust seasoning to preference before transferring the mint chutney to a jar or container for immediate use or storage.

How to Store Mint Chutney

To prolong the shelf life of your homemade mint chutney, transfer it to an airtight container. Store it in the refrigerator to maintain its freshness.

Consume it within 4-5 days for optimal taste and quality.

Serving Suggestions

  • Spread for burgers, sandwiches, and wraps: You can use this sauce for sandwiches, veggie burgers, or wraps. Traditionally, it's used inside kathi rolls or frankies as a spread, adding freshness to the stuffed fillings.
  • Dip or condiment: Mint chutney is a bright, tangy, and slightly spicy flavor that pairs well with plant-based samosas, Chickpea and Potato Turnovers, and veggie and tofu kebabs. Serve it with naan, parathas, or roti for an extra burst of flavor alongside a meal.
  • With kebabs and tandoori - Mint chutney is commonly served as a dipping sauce for tandoori dishes, including tandoori vegetables, paneer, or kebabs, enhancing the smoky flavors with a cool, minty contrast.
  • Dressing for grain bowls: You can use it for them. Mix it with lemon juice and olive oil to create a light, refreshing dressing for quinoa, brown rice, or other grains.
  • With samosas or pakoras - A classic pairing for Indian snacks, adding a refreshing, tangy contrast.
